We’re so appreciate the opportunity to represent this unique book, because it is written by Doctor of Psychology, a professor of two universities situated on Baikal shores: Baikal State University of Economics and Law(Irkutsk) and Buryat State University (Ulan-Ude). It is worth to be said that recognition and the popularity of the work increased when in 2009 the author received the certificate of Irkutsk Oblast Book of Records in the nomination “The Most Enigmatic Book about Lake Baikal”.

Polish insurgents on Lake Baikal

Poles as well as Russian subjects during several centuries "found themselves" in Siberia and the Baikal by well-known ways: for their freedom-loving activities for sovereignty of the homeland, in the 19th century tens, hundreds and thousands of them went to penal servitude and to exile. Many Poles were held in prisons since the period of the 1830's rebellion, and shared their fate with the Decembrists.

Recreational resources and tourism at Lake Baikal

Recreational resources are firstly purely natural factors and (or) combined with human creations that promote to strengthen and preserve human health. Recreational use of the territory of the Baikal region and the lake itself is aimed at meeting the needs of the population in suburb recreation areas, creating spa complexes on the basis of the existing balneotherapeutic resources, development of ecological, educational, and adventure tourism through the use of natural, cultural, historical and archaeological sites.

Legends of Lake Baikal

Following the legend, peoples in the Siberian lands appeared long time ago. At once they found that lands attractive owing to the rich forests and vast steppes. The only problem depressed them: there was no water at all. Once they met on their way an wayfarer that gave them an advice to not search for happiness from happiness. The people didn’t take into account his words and moved farther. They went round and round, got exhausted a lot, but managed to find no place where the gifts would be provided for them by God.

We, Siberians are accustomed to paint Baikal in bright and enthusiastic paint. That only cost statements and thoughts of the famous writer Vladimir Rasputin, from which emanates the talent, admiration and love. Many of them are scattered in several of his works, and often reflect the uniqueness of Lake Baikal: “The Man took aback at the sight of Lake Baikal, because it does not fit in his presentation: Baikal lay, not where something like this could be, was not so what action is usually "indifferent" nature.

Landscape around Lake Baikal

Pokoiniki “decedents” is a cape on the Baikal shore, covered by miraculous pinery. There are two variants of the explanation of this name origin. The first is connected with the tragic circumstances: a heavy disease suddenly appeared in a local nomad camp of the Evenk and all its inhabitants died out. The sight of Crosses, towered on the cape, scared away the seafarers. The second variant is attributed to the word pokoinyi “calm”, “quiet”. In works about the Baikal the first variant is more popular.

Ecological economy (economical ecology) of Lake Baikal

The movement for so-called "green economy" – economic and financial activity as well as consumer behavior, which would greatly facilitate environmental preservation and investment attraction into the sphere of nature protection – is gaining popularity nowadays. The essence of this phenomenon, in our view, could be reflected in the expression that has already been mentioned: "economy should be ecological, and ecology - economical" (see pp.157, 158). It is important that both of these words have the same root «oikog» which means «home, Motherland».

Baikal Flora

The external beauty of Lake Baikal is primarily a combination of magnificent bays, capes and coves, and mountains and hills surrounding the lake with their rich flora. The diversity of trees, shrubs, grasses and flowers that can be found on Lake Baikal is hard to imagine. But it is trees that define the perception of local nature. They are a pine, a larch, a cedar, a birch, a fir, an aspen and a cedar elfin. At least 90 % of the Baikal taiga is comprised of these trees natural commonwealth or forests with a predominance of a single tree species.

Scholars about Baikal

V. Solovyev’s ideas cited above developed further and found some followers in Russia. In the late XIX – early XX centuries prominent scholars I.P. Borodin, A.P. Semenov-Tien-Shansky, V.I. Taleyev and some others developed an ethical-aesthetic approach to environmental protection and reserve management. This approach focuses upon determination of the ethical value of the natural world and it stressed the importance of building humane attitude of Man towards virgin nature, whatever form it should take - be it the floral or animal world, etc.

Devastating earthquake and Bay Proval on Baikal

Bay Proval is a shallow part of the Baikal that was formed because of the sinking of former Tsagansk steppe during the powerful earthquake at Lake Baikal in 1861 – 1862. It was a tragedy for the Buryat uluses such as Barsheevsky, Batogaevsky, Bakhaisky, Baltashevsky situated in this area. The waters that filled the lowland were named Bay Proval; at present it occupies about 191 square kilometers.

Peculiarities in perception and understanding of Baikal from the points of view of people of different nationalities

One of the nationalities, which were "lucky" to create different unfavorable stories and myths among the inhabitants of Baikal were Czechs. First, there were episodes when the “Czechs”, marched to Siberia during the civil war, were sometimes committing violence against the local population, and this information was prominent in almost all books of history. In the folklore even a song preserved with such words: “we were attacked by angry Czechs”.

Multi-ethnic interaction on the Baikal land

The ethnic heterogeneity is a common phenomenon for Siberia (as for the whole world). Peoples reflected this in various legends. Thus, in the Yakut Legend “Er-Sogotokh” a knight related to a Mongol tribe, passionately loving the Baikal still leaves it and goes to live in new places down the Lena River. There is only one reason for that, Er-Sogotokh does not want to be an “assassin” for Genghis Khan. Having gone a long way down the river, the bator (knight) meets people whose “speech was clear and the language was familiar”.

On the one hand, a lot of Asian peoples feel their ties of blood. Researches of Japanese language mention the existence of lexical and grammar forms of Altaic languages in it. It means that the Japanese faraway ancestors have visited our places.

Heritage of Russian-Mongolian collaboration

The Mongolian and the Baikal regions are geographical neighbors and even relatives, if to remember about Mongolian origin of Buryat people. The fact that long ago Mongols knew about the existence of Lake Baikal and visited its shores is explained historically. First, ages ago migrant tribes of Mongols, undoubtedly, came tothe Baikal region. We can say that they were the forefathers of some contemporary Buryat kins (especially Selengiskie Buryats). There is evidence that Mongols visited Baikal in an organized manner.

Barguzin: facts and fables

At the juncture of River Barguzin with Lake Baikal the village of Ust-Barguzin is situated. It had long been “the capital” of the eastern coast fishermen and the place where there was a fish factory producing canned fish. But the twists and turns of economy in the 90s of the XXth century brought the local fish industry to naught. At present in Ust-Barguzin there is the office of the Zabaikalsk National Park that was founded in 1986. The activity of this nature conservation organization is so important for the places we speak about.

Acknowledgements

The author of this book was born and raised in the villages on the bank of the sacred sea. Love and respect for his Motherland were brought up in him by the close to him people together with the Baikal nature. To mention most of them, one needs a tremendous amount of paper. But one can not forget those who have gone to "another world", leaving an indelible mark on our land, and especially in the heart of the author.
