The favorites of the Baikal taiga

The Evenks (Tungus) living in Eastern Siberia include those living in the territory near Lake Baikal; they are one of the oldest indigenous people who lived in these areas and with whom the Russians cooperated since their first steps to these taiga lands. Though the Evenks were under the dominion of the Buryats and paid them a tribute they did not immediately submit to the dominion of newcomers.

The exile to Siberia

Shortly after its development Siberia became an annotation for all sorts of renegades from the laws and the citizens inconvenient for powerful people in Russia. In 1754 the exile to Siberia was officially fixed as permanent, it could be of two types: for work and location. Hence there were two categories of exiles – “exiled settlers” and “exiled convicts”. Usually among the exiles of the first group were the people subjected by the court to trade executions.

Baikal matters of the Russian old timers

Before seeing the Baikal the Russian pioneers knew some information about it. The reports about the lake-sea came together with the description of the peoples who lived on its shores or near it. Here is an example from the report of well known explorers Vasca Vietezev and Kurbatka Ivanov: “And in questioning the Tungus prince Mozheulko and his people from the ulus (village) spoke about the Bratsky people and about the Lama and that the Bratsky people call the lake the Baikal, and about the Tunguzsk peak, and about the Shilka River, and about Vitimsky peaks.

Interaction between man and nature

An abiding love for virgin and absolute beauty of Baikal makes us give thought to the origins of these feelings and how they are connected with a human-being. Far back ancient philosophers were well aware of global dependence of human role and being on natural principles. It’s well stated by ancient Indians’ in their epic “Panchatantra”: We are guided by our temper and nature While performing our deeds. Water always gets cool

Buddhism in the Lake Baikal

Mindful of the fact that philosophy and religion of Buddhism “ripened” from age-old wisdom of Asian nations, it is reasonable to allude to the origins of Indian philosophy of life, to basics of their views on the unity of the coexistence of all living things. This is reasoned by the fact that lots of ancient beliefs, which originated in this country, blended in with Buddhism.

Siberian shamanism

An interesting hypothesis about the origin of the Siberian shamanism coming from ancient Indian priests – samaneyans that were expelled from their homes or were exterminated by the Brahmins, was first expressed in the 17th century by the Dutch geographer N. Vitzen, and later developed by G.F. Miller. “Outcasted from their former abodes, scattered across the Mongolian countries and driven to Siberia, samaneyans little by little turned aside from the wisdom of their ancestors, so that their children and followers do not have any trace of it ...

Ecological economy (economical ecology) of Lake Baikal

The movement for so-called "green economy" – economic and financial activity as well as consumer behavior, which would greatly facilitate environmental preservation and investment attraction into the sphere of nature protection – is gaining popularity nowadays. The essence of this phenomenon, in our view, could be reflected in the expression that has already been mentioned: "economy should be ecological, and ecology - economical" (see pp.157, 158). It is important that both of these words have the same root «oikog» which means «home, Motherland».

Directions and problems of environmental protection activity

There is a growing need for basic ecological education of world population in general and the citizens of Russia in particular. It is not only the struggle for clean air, water and soil, it is the fight for the survival of mankind, our physiological and psychological health. Moreover, there are regions where ecological problems are becoming so important that they cause alarm and stress among the population. This is especially true for big cities.

Religion and Lake Baikal

The place of religion in nature is so natural that few people think about this. And when we start thinking about it, two extremes are manifested: either religion is identified with nature, or it is blamed for forgetting the laws of nature. A different approach to the problem had represented the genius Russian scientist Mikhail Lomonosov. He wrote about the unity of the Creator’s acts and the faith in him. “The nature and faith are two siblings, relatives, and may never come to quarrel among themselves.

Devastating earthquake and Bay Proval on Baikal

Bay Proval is a shallow part of the Baikal that was formed because of the sinking of former Tsagansk steppe during the powerful earthquake at Lake Baikal in 1861 – 1862. It was a tragedy for the Buryat uluses such as Barsheevsky, Batogaevsky, Bakhaisky, Baltashevsky situated in this area. The waters that filled the lowland were named Bay Proval; at present it occupies about 191 square kilometers.

Values of Baikal Water

We can speak endlessly about the effect of water on health. It is both its purification mission, and water therapy with the soothing effect of water falling sounds, and healing effects of aquatic procedures and many other good things. Moreover, the legends about the Baikal emphasize that water healing properties intensify after prayers and ministry to masters and the spirits of the Sacred Sea. But it is necessary to emphasize the healing effect of cold water. In terms of getting tempered the Baikal waters are an inexhaustible resource of improving human health.
