Legends of Cape Shaman

The Shaman Cape as well as his numerous namesakes, for instance, the Shaman Stone in the head of the Angara and the cape at the Olkhon Island, is connected with some geological and social mysteries. On the one hand, the cape is located in the place that some scientists believe to be an ancient estuary of the Irkut that now flows into the Angara. This view that first mooted in the mid XIXth century was supported by P. Kropotkin, A.L. Chekanovsky and I.D. Chersky.

Siberian shamanism

An interesting hypothesis about the origin of the Siberian shamanism coming from ancient Indian priests – samaneyans that were expelled from their homes or were exterminated by the Brahmins, was first expressed in the 17th century by the Dutch geographer N. Vitzen, and later developed by G.F. Miller. “Outcasted from their former abodes, scattered across the Mongolian countries and driven to Siberia, samaneyans little by little turned aside from the wisdom of their ancestors, so that their children and followers do not have any trace of it ...

Islands of Lake Baikal

According to some experts, there are about 30 of them, assuming islands that are relatively small stone platforms interspersed into the Baikal water (formally there are 22 islands on the Baikal). Among the largest islands, as it was already mentioned, there is Olkhon and the Archipelago of the Ushkanyi Islands: Grand Ushkani, Long, Thin, and Round. Ten land areas of the Small Sea between Olkhon and the north-western coast can be assumed to be islands. Among them are Ugungoy, Borakchin, Zumugoy, Hubyn, and Big Toynik (in the Buryat language toynik means “patella”,

Buryats as settlers of Baikal land

The majority of researchers of the name of one of the Baikal people, the Buryats, agree that the ethnonym of this word designates the Mongolian tribes that “lived in the thick of the forest, in the forest (buraa) growing in groups or lines in mountains or steppes”. They were forest people, and it corresponds to the concept “forest tribes”, by which “the Mongolians of steppes called the population living on both sides of the Baikal”. Besides this and other interpretations of the name of the people there is the opinion of State Duma of Russia Deputy V.

Religion and Lake Baikal

The place of religion in nature is so natural that few people think about this. And when we start thinking about it, two extremes are manifested: either religion is identified with nature, or it is blamed for forgetting the laws of nature. A different approach to the problem had represented the genius Russian scientist Mikhail Lomonosov. He wrote about the unity of the Creator’s acts and the faith in him. “The nature and faith are two siblings, relatives, and may never come to quarrel among themselves.

Buddhism in the Lake Baikal

Mindful of the fact that philosophy and religion of Buddhism “ripened” from age-old wisdom of Asian nations, it is reasonable to allude to the origins of Indian philosophy of life, to basics of their views on the unity of the coexistence of all living things. This is reasoned by the fact that lots of ancient beliefs, which originated in this country, blended in with Buddhism.
