Irkutsk and Lake Baikal

Many people consider the words “Irkutsk is situated near the Baikal” to be at a stretch, because the distance from Irkutsk to the Baikal is more than 50 km. But if you come to the shore of the Irkutsk Reservoir or to the dam of the hydroelectric power station and you see how the purest Baikal water flows here, feel gentle fresh wind, and get the impression you feel the Sacred Sea. For Irkutsk and Shelekhovo citizens it is very significant to realize that the tap water they drink, wash and take a bath in is the Baikal water taken from the Irkutsk Resevoir.

Christianity and Lake Baikal

The influence of Christianity on the life of the Baikal community and its attitude towards the nature is obvious. This is explained by the fact that since the time the Russians started to inhabit the area numerous temples and monasteries on the Baikal lakeside have been built.

Poetry and prose of lake Baikal

Today I am glad to notice that many writers and poets help to form compassionate and humane attitude toward nature by their creative activity, they contribute to the development of people’s interest and love for Baikal and its nature. On the other hand, literature sometimes tends to emphasize the eternal conflict between Nature and Man, showing with the help of literary means that it is on the side of a man. J.

Islands of Lake Baikal

According to some experts, there are about 30 of them, assuming islands that are relatively small stone platforms interspersed into the Baikal water (formally there are 22 islands on the Baikal). Among the largest islands, as it was already mentioned, there is Olkhon and the Archipelago of the Ushkanyi Islands: Grand Ushkani, Long, Thin, and Round. Ten land areas of the Small Sea between Olkhon and the north-western coast can be assumed to be islands. Among them are Ugungoy, Borakchin, Zumugoy, Hubyn, and Big Toynik (in the Buryat language toynik means “patella”,

Lake Baikal fishing

To get to know what fish are common for the Baikal and the rivers that flow in the lake it is enough to take a look at the map. We use this method one more time to see the aborigine names of fish on it. The so called “Children of the taiga”, the Evenki have always treated the water creatures partially. The names of River Turkukit near Davshi and of River Turka that is situated in the middle part to the east of the lake originate from the name of the omul, the most common fish in the Baikal.

Fauna on Lake Baikal

Meeting faunal forms of the Siberian Sea was often surprising for the man, desirable or undesirable depending on the circumstances and, therefore, the places that got the names of animals are much more frequent than those having floral names. At that many of these names are represented by words of different languages.

Landscape around Lake Baikal

Pokoiniki “decedents” is a cape on the Baikal shore, covered by miraculous pinery. There are two variants of the explanation of this name origin. The first is connected with the tragic circumstances: a heavy disease suddenly appeared in a local nomad camp of the Evenk and all its inhabitants died out. The sight of Crosses, towered on the cape, scared away the seafarers. The second variant is attributed to the word pokoinyi “calm”, “quiet”. In works about the Baikal the first variant is more popular.

Polish insurgents on Lake Baikal

Poles as well as Russian subjects during several centuries "found themselves" in Siberia and the Baikal by well-known ways: for their freedom-loving activities for sovereignty of the homeland, in the 19th century tens, hundreds and thousands of them went to penal servitude and to exile. Many Poles were held in prisons since the period of the 1830's rebellion, and shared their fate with the Decembrists.

Water transformations in Lake Baikal

A lot was said about water and a lot will be. But it is worth considering the cases, at least briefly, of the water other manifestations that are quite numerous: ice, snow, steam, fog, hail, etc. There is also the so-called heavy water in Lake Baikal. Its discovery is rather interesting. In 1932 American scientists G. Urey and E.

French science-fiction writer about lake Baikal

One of the first Frenchmen, who visited Lake Baikal, was probably Delisle de la Kroyer Louis – an astronomer and geographer, a member of the Second Expedition to Kamchatka. It is interesting that in Irkutsk, he made up the table of sunrises and sunsets, and specified the geographic location of the region.

We’re so appreciate the opportunity to represent this unique book, because it is written by Doctor of Psychology, a professor of two universities situated on Baikal shores: Baikal State University of Economics and Law(Irkutsk) and Buryat State University (Ulan-Ude). Underwater crater and oil reserves of lake Baikal

Cape and Кiver Shved (one more mysterious name of the Baikal), Cape Tolsty, Bay and River Zelenovskaya that are situated to the south of Cape Baklanyi, are as beautiful as many other Baikal places. In 1989 my cousin Ivan and I came across another mysterious phenomenon here. In Bay Zelenovskaya, 100 – 150 meters off the shore we netted in the evening to eat fish soup in the morning. Not to lose our fishing tackle we fastened to its end a large piece of white foam plastic measuring 50*50*50 cm, so that it was clearly seen even in a stormy sea.

Buddhism in the Lake Baikal

Mindful of the fact that philosophy and religion of Buddhism “ripened” from age-old wisdom of Asian nations, it is reasonable to allude to the origins of Indian philosophy of life, to basics of their views on the unity of the coexistence of all living things. This is reasoned by the fact that lots of ancient beliefs, which originated in this country, blended in with Buddhism.

Baikal matters of the Russian old timers

Before seeing the Baikal the Russian pioneers knew some information about it. The reports about the lake-sea came together with the description of the peoples who lived on its shores or near it. Here is an example from the report of well known explorers Vasca Vietezev and Kurbatka Ivanov: “And in questioning the Tungus prince Mozheulko and his people from the ulus (village) spoke about the Bratsky people and about the Lama and that the Bratsky people call the lake the Baikal, and about the Tunguzsk peak, and about the Shilka River, and about Vitimsky peaks.

Baikal Flora

The external beauty of Lake Baikal is primarily a combination of magnificent bays, capes and coves, and mountains and hills surrounding the lake with their rich flora. The diversity of trees, shrubs, grasses and flowers that can be found on Lake Baikal is hard to imagine. But it is trees that define the perception of local nature. They are a pine, a larch, a cedar, a birch, a fir, an aspen and a cedar elfin. At least 90 % of the Baikal taiga is comprised of these trees natural commonwealth or forests with a predominance of a single tree species.

Scholars about Baikal

V. Solovyev’s ideas cited above developed further and found some followers in Russia. In the late XIX – early XX centuries prominent scholars I.P. Borodin, A.P. Semenov-Tien-Shansky, V.I. Taleyev and some others developed an ethical-aesthetic approach to environmental protection and reserve management. This approach focuses upon determination of the ethical value of the natural world and it stressed the importance of building humane attitude of Man towards virgin nature, whatever form it should take - be it the floral or animal world, etc.

Americans about Baikal

There is a widespread opinion, that the Americans have seen a lot of different views and delights, and that is why they are indifferent about another’s beauty. But still it does not concern the sacred sea. “Even those of us, who was tired of american ecological evangelism of the last decade, and who had thought, that exaggerations and hyperboles could not surprise them, realized, that, nevertheless, we was seeking for the superlative degree adjectives in our past in an effort to describe Baikal only in a low voice” – wrote Esquire G. Davis.

Ecology and service in Japan

Considering other nations’ treatment of nature, ecological traditions and their connections with Baikal subject area it is necessary to make a stop at corresponding reality objects and events, related to the Land of the Rising Sun. On the one hand, a lot of Asian peoples feel their ties of blood. Researches of Japanese language mention the existence of lexical and grammar forms of Altaic languages in it. It means that the Japanese faraway ancestors have visited our places.

Peculiarities in perception and understanding of Baikal from the points of view of people of different nationalities

One of the nationalities, which were "lucky" to create different unfavorable stories and myths among the inhabitants of Baikal were Czechs. First, there were episodes when the “Czechs”, marched to Siberia during the civil war, were sometimes committing violence against the local population, and this information was prominent in almost all books of history. In the folklore even a song preserved with such words: “we were attacked by angry Czechs”.
