Fauna on Lake Baikal

Meeting faunal forms of the Siberian Sea was often surprising for the man, desirable or undesirable depending on the circumstances and, therefore, the places that got the names of animals are much more frequent than those having floral names. At that many of these names are represented by words of different languages.

Flora and fauna of Lake Baikal

Scientists point out several features of the flora and fauna of Lake Baikal. The first one is a great biodiversity of them. It was estimated that there are more than 2500 species of fauna and about 1000 species of flora there. At that terrestrial species of plants and animals are not taken into consideration. The second feature is a high degree of endemism, i.e., a significant number of species can be found only in this part of planet; almost 40% of plants and 85% of animals are endemic here.

Polish insurgents on Lake Baikal

Poles as well as Russian subjects during several centuries "found themselves" in Siberia and the Baikal by well-known ways: for their freedom-loving activities for sovereignty of the homeland, in the 19th century tens, hundreds and thousands of them went to penal servitude and to exile. Many Poles were held in prisons since the period of the 1830's rebellion, and shared their fate with the Decembrists.

Islands of Lake Baikal

According to some experts, there are about 30 of them, assuming islands that are relatively small stone platforms interspersed into the Baikal water (formally there are 22 islands on the Baikal). Among the largest islands, as it was already mentioned, there is Olkhon and the Archipelago of the Ushkanyi Islands: Grand Ushkani, Long, Thin, and Round. Ten land areas of the Small Sea between Olkhon and the north-western coast can be assumed to be islands. Among them are Ugungoy, Borakchin, Zumugoy, Hubyn, and Big Toynik (in the Buryat language toynik means “patella”,

Religion and Lake Baikal

The place of religion in nature is so natural that few people think about this. And when we start thinking about it, two extremes are manifested: either religion is identified with nature, or it is blamed for forgetting the laws of nature. A different approach to the problem had represented the genius Russian scientist Mikhail Lomonosov. He wrote about the unity of the Creator’s acts and the faith in him. “The nature and faith are two siblings, relatives, and may never come to quarrel among themselves.

Thoughts about the image and brand of Lake Baikal

We, Siberians are accustomed to paint Baikal in bright and enthusiastic paint. That only cost statements and thoughts of the famous writer Vladimir Rasputin, from which emanates the talent, admiration and love. Many of them are scattered in several of his works, and often reflect the uniqueness of Lake Baikal: “The Man took aback at the sight of Lake Baikal, because it does not fit in his presentation: Baikal lay, not where something like this could be, was not so what action is usually "indifferent" nature.

Ecological economy (economical ecology) of Lake Baikal

The movement for so-called "green economy" – economic and financial activity as well as consumer behavior, which would greatly facilitate environmental preservation and investment attraction into the sphere of nature protection – is gaining popularity nowadays. The essence of this phenomenon, in our view, could be reflected in the expression that has already been mentioned: "economy should be ecological, and ecology - economical" (see pp.157, 158). It is important that both of these words have the same root «oikog» which means «home, Motherland».

Baikal matters of the Russian old timers

Before seeing the Baikal the Russian pioneers knew some information about it. The reports about the lake-sea came together with the description of the peoples who lived on its shores or near it. Here is an example from the report of well known explorers Vasca Vietezev and Kurbatka Ivanov: “And in questioning the Tungus prince Mozheulko and his people from the ulus (village) spoke about the Bratsky people and about the Lama and that the Bratsky people call the lake the Baikal, and about the Tunguzsk peak, and about the Shilka River, and about Vitimsky peaks.

Values of Baikal Water

We can speak endlessly about the effect of water on health. It is both its purification mission, and water therapy with the soothing effect of water falling sounds, and healing effects of aquatic procedures and many other good things. Moreover, the legends about the Baikal emphasize that water healing properties intensify after prayers and ministry to masters and the spirits of the Sacred Sea. But it is necessary to emphasize the healing effect of cold water. In terms of getting tempered the Baikal waters are an inexhaustible resource of improving human health.

Americans about Baikal

There is a widespread opinion, that the Americans have seen a lot of different views and delights, and that is why they are indifferent about another’s beauty. But still it does not concern the sacred sea. “Even those of us, who was tired of american ecological evangelism of the last decade, and who had thought, that exaggerations and hyperboles could not surprise them, realized, that, nevertheless, we was seeking for the superlative degree adjectives in our past in an effort to describe Baikal only in a low voice” – wrote Esquire G. Davis.

Scholars about Baikal

V. Solovyev’s ideas cited above developed further and found some followers in Russia. In the late XIX – early XX centuries prominent scholars I.P. Borodin, A.P. Semenov-Tien-Shansky, V.I. Taleyev and some others developed an ethical-aesthetic approach to environmental protection and reserve management. This approach focuses upon determination of the ethical value of the natural world and it stressed the importance of building humane attitude of Man towards virgin nature, whatever form it should take - be it the floral or animal world, etc.

Environmental protection of Baikal and laws

The experience gained by the world community during the past decade shows that the “wilder” nature is the more it needs our protection. I mean that human interference in these areas of wildlife should be regulated by law.

Paths of Putin on Baikal slopes

The author decided to write this little chapter and to include it in the book at the very last moment before its third edition. Today the name of the Second President of the Russian Federation, and then of its Prime Minister is thoroughly connected with Baikal, and it can not be denied. Especially if the event (decision), which should break with the ambiguity of this relationship, happens. And the reasons for it are the following.

Devastating earthquake and Bay Proval on Baikal

Bay Proval is a shallow part of the Baikal that was formed because of the sinking of former Tsagansk steppe during the powerful earthquake at Lake Baikal in 1861 – 1862. It was a tragedy for the Buryat uluses such as Barsheevsky, Batogaevsky, Bakhaisky, Baltashevsky situated in this area. The waters that filled the lowland were named Bay Proval; at present it occupies about 191 square kilometers.

Psychology and technology of ecological settlements on Baikal

Speaking about cities and the towns situated on the shores of the Baikal and near it, peculiarities of their life and culture I find it useful to reflect on the common subject – the interrelations within the triad City – Nature – Human, taking into consideration that possible agglomeration of them in the Baikal region can sharpen the problem even more.

Afterword

Not Russian, but G. Davis - an American participant of the joint project "Baikal region in the 21 century: a model of sustainable development or continuous degradation?" said a phrase excited me: "It is difficult for Russia to pick up a more appropriate metaphor than Lake Baikal. Deep, cool, great, pure, ancient, totally unique and endangered "(124, pp. 64). This original and, in my opinion, a realistic comparison allows to draw a parallel between environmental problems of Lake Baikal and more ambitious social and environmental issues in our country.

Siberian shamanism

An interesting hypothesis about the origin of the Siberian shamanism coming from ancient Indian priests – samaneyans that were expelled from their homes or were exterminated by the Brahmins, was first expressed in the 17th century by the Dutch geographer N. Vitzen, and later developed by G.F. Miller. “Outcasted from their former abodes, scattered across the Mongolian countries and driven to Siberia, samaneyans little by little turned aside from the wisdom of their ancestors, so that their children and followers do not have any trace of it ...

Ecology and service in Japan

Considering other nations’ treatment of nature, ecological traditions and their connections with Baikal subject area it is necessary to make a stop at corresponding reality objects and events, related to the Land of the Rising Sun. On the one hand, a lot of Asian peoples feel their ties of blood. Researches of Japanese language mention the existence of lexical and grammar forms of Altaic languages in it. It means that the Japanese faraway ancestors have visited our places.

Heritage of Russian-Mongolian collaboration

The Mongolian and the Baikal regions are geographical neighbors and even relatives, if to remember about Mongolian origin of Buryat people. The fact that long ago Mongols knew about the existence of Lake Baikal and visited its shores is explained historically. First, ages ago migrant tribes of Mongols, undoubtedly, came tothe Baikal region. We can say that they were the forefathers of some contemporary Buryat kins (especially Selengiskie Buryats). There is evidence that Mongols visited Baikal in an organized manner.

The harm to nature is harm to themselves

Human attitude towards environment

Psychology of nature is a conditional and, certainly, a generalized concept. But if psychology is a science of soul, then it is quite reasonable to speak about soul of nature, its mysterious being which is manifested not only in man himself or society but in all that surrounds us. Nature entrusted a man with unfolding his soul by little through his mind and feelings and people do it gradually, wondering at his prior sluggishness and tardiness every step.
